It’s still a mystery – this thing called decompression sickness. At one time the rules seemed clear: follow the deco tables, ascend slowly and you won’t get bent. Now we warn divers: no table, no computer, no procedure can ever completely prevent DCS. Reality bites. What we do know for sure is this: When a person breathes a compressed gas under pressure, inert gases such as nitrogen are absorbed by the body. When that pressure is decreased, the inert gas comes back out. The trick, of course, is to prevent it from doing harm during the outgassing process.
